The Helicopter Gyro.
As I do not have a photo of a gyro to talk about so I have
revised a line art drawing to illustrate the effect the gyro has on the
helicopter. There are individuals who did learn to fly without a
gyro years ago before early mechanical gyros were introduced. Today,
the gyro represents one of the two components that has benefited the
greatest from advances in technology, the other is the radio.
Absolutely have one.
The gyro is a feedback device that assists in the control
of the rudder servo. This will measure a force applied to the tail
and either stop the tail from rotating or return it to its origin. |

To look at the tail rotor from a different perspective, the right thrust generated is acting as an anti-torque device that is keeping tail
stationary while that main rotor disk rotates clockwise. The gyro connects
to the rudder servo and senses rotational motion, now we must
consider into two two different technologyies, rate piezo gyro and heading
hold/lock gyro. There is a difference of opinion for beginners
learning from the start with a heading hold gyro, yet in the long run
these are really fantastic devices.
The rate piezo gyro will sense a force being applied to the helicopter
and continue to add opposite input until the rotation is halted, this
generally will result with the tail in a different location that when the
force was applied. The nature of a rate gyro will dampen external
force, wind but will also dampen your input from the radio.
Essentially, the higher the gain setting the tail will hold in a stronger
wind with the penalty that as you deflect the rudder stick the maximum
rotational speed is also reduced.
The heading lock or hold gyro (HH) uses software built on the same
piezo technology but reacts to the external force and will return
the tail to the exact position it started. For example, if the tail
is pointing due south and a crosswind gust picks up the tail will have no tendency
to move. By comparison, the HH puts additional stress on the tail
control system and there are other new factors to learn but in the long
run this is the best product to buy.
